Tom Thibodeau has agreed to an extension with the New York Knicks, taking him through the 2027-2028 season. The two-time NBA coach of the year has found a real home with New York after leading them to back-to-back conference semifinal appearances and being one win away from the conference finals. Finishing in second place in the East with a 50-32 record last season, the Knicks believe they are close to a championship, which would be the first time since 1973.

This signing continued the Knicks' very aggressive summer, which included the addition of Mikal Bridges, the keeping of free agent OG Anunoby, and the extension of Jalen Bruson, which saved the team 113 million. With all of these additions and a strong supporting cast coming back from last season, the Knicks look to improve overall.

This signing in 2020 with the Knicks was a full circle moment for Thibodeau, as he grew up a Knicks fan because of his father, Thomas Sr. Introduced to the Knicks at a young age, Thibodeau became a fan of the team and then ultimately became an assistant head coach from 1996-2003 under Jeff Van Gundy. With this extension, Thibodeau will stay in New York for the longest time on one team throughout his 30-plus-year career in coaching.
