Celtics sign free agent G Lonnie Walker IV

The NBA Champion Boston Celtics are still at work during the offseason, signing six-year veteran Lonnie Walker IV to a one-year deal. Walker, who played his last season with the Nets, averaged 9.7 PPG on 42.3% shooting and 38.4% from three-point range. He played 58 games last season on the Nets, who finished 32-50 and missed the play-in games. Walker is a solid bench piece, and for a team that just won the championship, depth is extremely important.

Lonnie has played for three teams in his career, spending most of his career with the San Antonio Spurs. He had two seasons on the Spurs, during which time he averaged over 10 PPG and was somewhat of a vocal point guard. However, throughout his time with the Spurs, he only made the playoffs once, and that was during his rookie season.

After the 2021-2022 season, he signed a one-year, six-million dollar deal with the Lakers. On the Lakers, Walker had his most efficient season shooting from the field and averaged 11.7 PPG. Walker helped the Lakers reach the WFC during that season with multiple standout games against the Warriors in the second round. After this stint with the Lakers, Walker signed a one-year, two-million-dollar deal with the Nets.

Now, here he is, signing with the defending champions on another one-year deal. Walker is exactly what the Celtics need: a bench scorer. With their starting five and sixth man already returning from last season, the only real roster improvements are on the bench. With Walker's streaky shooting, speed with the ball, and strong defending, he is a perfect match for the Celtics.

As this will be Walker's fourth team in four years, it may take him a few games to settle in, but he is the perfect piece for an already-stacked Boston lineup.
