Andrew Wiggins drilled a go-ahead 3-pointer with 31 seconds remaining, Bam Adebayo poured in 30 points with a career-high six 3-pointers, and the Miami Heat handed the NBA champion Oklahoma City Thunder a 122-120 loss Saturday night.
Norman Powell added 19 points for Miami, Pelle Larsson scored 16, and Simone Fontecchio and Myron Gardner combined for 24 points off the bench. The Heat played shorthanded, missing Tyler Herro (sore big toe, bruised rib), Davion Mitchell (bruised left shoulder) and Jaime Jaquez Jr. (sprained left knee), yet still outshot the Thunder by a wide margin, attempting 111 field goals to Oklahoma City’s 77.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led all scorers with 39 points for the Thunder, who fell to 35-8. Aaron Wiggins scored 18, Ajay Mitchell had 15 and Chet Holmgren finished with 14.
Oklahoma City lost Jalen Williams midway through the second quarter because of what the team described as right thigh soreness, though Williams appeared to be favoring his right hamstring as he exited. Thunder coach Mark Daigneault said Williams will be evaluated Sunday.
After Wiggins’ clutch 3 put Miami ahead for good, Oklahoma City had a chance to respond, but Holmgren missed on a lob attempt off an inbounds pass from Alex Caruso. The Thunder forced a stop and called timeout with 3.0 seconds left, setting up one final play. Caruso inbounded to Gilgeous-Alexander, who quickly returned the ball to Caruso, but his 3-point attempt rattled off the backboard and rim as time expired.
The loss marked the first time this season Oklahoma City fell when scoring at least 120 points. The Thunder had been 24-0 in such games entering the night.
Gilgeous-Alexander extended his streak of 20-point games to 113 consecutive regular-season contests, moving within 13 of Wilt Chamberlain’s record. It was the 77th time during that stretch he scored at least 30 points.
