Saddiq Bey and Zion Williamson each posted 24 points and 10 rebounds as the New Orleans Pelicans survived a late collapse and rallied to beat the San Antonio Spurs 104-95 on Sunday night.
New Orleans built a lead that ballooned to 19 points midway through the third quarter, only to see San Antonio storm back and briefly seize control. The Spurs opened the fourth quarter on a 24-5 surge, but the Pelicans responded with a decisive 17-3 run down the stretch to pull away and avoid a season sweep.
Victor Wembanyama led San Antonio with 16 points, 16 rebounds and four blocks, while Keldon Johnson added 15 points. Despite the comeback, the Spurs were unable to capitalize late, faltering at the free-throw line when it mattered most.
After New Orleans’ lead grew to 19 in the third, Spurs coach Mitch Johnson benched his entire starting lineup following a timeout. The move sparked a dramatic turnaround, as San Antonio closed the quarter and opened the fourth on a 21-4 run, including 16 consecutive points.
Stephon Castle’s free throw gave the Spurs a 93-89 advantage with 4:39 remaining, but San Antonio missed its final four free throws and shot just 19 of 32 at the line overall. The Pelicans took advantage, pulling away in the closing minutes.
Trey Murphy III contributed 17 points, nine assists and six rebounds for New Orleans, which earned its second straight victory. The Pelicans also finished strong after closing the first half on a 19-8 run to take a 56-47 lead at intermission.
San Antonio had its full rotation available for the first time since Dec. 29 with Devin Vassell returning from a strained left adductor. Vassell scored 13 points in 25 minutes.
