The Thunder announced Wednesday that Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is dealing with an abdominal strain and will be sidelined until after the break. The injury is expected to keep the reigning MVP out for at least five games, starting with Wednesday night’s matchup in San Antonio against the Spurs.
Gilgeous-Alexander will also miss the All-Star Game, where he had been slated to play for Team World under the league’s new three-team format. Oklahoma City said he will be reevaluated following the break, with the team’s first game back scheduled for Feb. 20 against the Brooklyn Nets.
The timing is notable given that Gilgeous-Alexander had been listed as questionable for Tuesday’s 128-92 win over Orlando because of a right index finger sprain and illness. He ultimately played and delivered 20 points and nine assists, extending his remarkable streak of games with at least 20 points to 121. He didn’t reach the mark until a free throw with 2:14 remaining in the fourth quarter, leaving him just five games shy of tying Wilt Chamberlain’s NBA record of 126 straight 20-point performances.
Oklahoma City, which owns the league’s best record, will now look to navigate the next couple of weeks without its star guard before reassessing his status after the All-Star break.
