Welcome to the inaugural edition of *Dynasty Watch* at The Predictors, where we dive deep into the nuances of Dynasty fantasy football—my personal favorite format after over a dozen years of experience. Unlike redraft leagues, where it's all about "win now," Dynasty is a long game. You’re building a team to DOMINATE year after year with a core lineup that stays relatively intact. It’s the ultimate test of foresight, strategy, and player development.
Over the coming weeks, we’ll cover everything from super flex 2-QB leagues to deep IDP formats and even Devy, the ultimate Dynasty format where you draft college and high school players before they hit the NFL. But today, let’s focus on some key players to target as we approach Week 2. Whether these players are on your waivers or a potential trade target, here’s who should be on your radar.
1. QB Sam Darnold (Minnesota Vikings)
Sam Darnold might not scream “Dynasty stud,” but stick with me here. Drafted third overall in 2018, Darnold’s career has been a rollercoaster. After tough stints with the Jets and Panthers, he spent time backing up Brock Purdy in San Francisco. Fast forward to this season, and Darnold is suddenly the Vikings' fill-in starter, leading them to a 2-0 start with QB7 numbers so far. Yeah, you read that right—QB7!
He’s no sure thing, but there’s reason to believe in a late-career resurgence. Look at Geno Smith, Baker Mayfield, or Derek Carr—guys who found success later in their careers. Darnold could be that next breakout if he continues to thrive in Minnesota’s system. He’s a must-add in super flex 2-QB leagues, and even in standard formats, he’s worth a stash. His trade value is still low, making him an excellent high-risk, high-reward pickup.
2. RB Braelon Allen (New York Jets)
Allen, the rookie from Wisconsin, was typically drafted as the RB8 in Dynasty rookie drafts this year. This class wasn’t particularly stacked, but Allen is a big, bruising back who has already shown flashes of potential. He’s in a great spot behind Breece Hall, who’s had success in the Jets' offense, especially with Aaron Rodgers commanding the show.
If Hall were to miss any time, Allen could be a league-winner. Even with Hall healthy, Allen showed last week he can deliver flex-worthy production. The Jets might lean on a 1-2 punch, giving Allen a shot to be relevant now and a valuable long-term asset.

3. WR Quentin Johnston (Los Angeles Chargers)
Let’s be real—Quentin Johnston had a forgettable rookie year. But last week? Boom. Two touchdowns later, Johnston is suddenly WR23 on the season and making waves. With Jim Harbaugh’s power run scheme coming in, it seemed like Johnston’s outlook was dim. But no one told him that.
While he’s likely rostered in most Dynasty leagues, there’s a chance his manager is still skeptical after last year’s disappointment. If so, you might be able to snag him in a trade for a reasonable price. Johnston has a legit shot at becoming the WR1 in LA, making him a high-upside trade target.
IDP Special: DT Gervon Dexter (Chicago Bears)
For those in deep IDP leagues, Gervon Dexter is an absolute gem. The second-round pick from Chicago is currently the DT4 after two weeks and is rostered in less than 5% of leagues. His stock is rising fast, and I’m buying wherever I can. If you need defensive help, especially at the DT position, Dexter is your guy.

These players won’t all be available on waivers, but that’s where the art of Dynasty comes into play. Scout your league, assess the trade market, and make moves that will not only help you this season but position you for long-term success. Keep an eye out for our weekly *Dynasty Watch* updates, where we’ll continue to break down key players, hidden gems, and deep-league stashes. Until next time, may your dynasty reign supreme!
