The inevitable move has finally happened in Pittsburgh.
QB Russell Wilson suffered a calf injury before the season began and has been working his way back. In his absence, QB Justin Fields took over, leading the Steelers to a 4-2 start and defeating the Raiders on the road 32-13 in their last contest. Wilson may be fully recovered from his injury as he has started taking first-team reps ahead of the Steelers Sunday Night Football matchup against the Jets. However, Wilson is still splitting those reps with Fields.
Should the Steelers start Russell Wilson?

Head coach Mike Tomlin has yet to name a starting quarterback ahead of the primetime matchup, adding a layer of suspense to the game. He emphasized that the quality of this week's practices will determine the starting quarterback. Wilson will likely start on Sunday if he performs well in these upcoming practices. If not, the Steelers can fall back onto Fields, who has the team right behind the Ravens for the division lead.
Wilson, 35, signed with the Steelers during the 2024 offseason on a veterans minimum contract. After spending the first ten years of his NFL career with the Seahawks, he was traded to the Broncos in March of 2022 in a historic deal that included five picks and three players. Wilson then signed a massive five-year, $245 million dollar contract with the Broncos, but after a rough couple of seasons with the team, he was cut, leaving an $85 million dollar dead cap hit. On the Steelers, Wilson looks for a fresh start and might get one in week seven.
Fields came out today and stated he didn't deserve to keep the starting job.
"I don't think I played good enough, if I'm being real with you. If I'm being real myself, I think if I did play well enough, I don't think there would be any sort of, who should be playing, who should not."

Fields also came to the Steelers in a similar way, although he was traded and not signed in free agency. Fields, 25, was drafted by the Bears in 2021 and struggled to gain his footing. With 40 touchdown to 30 interception ratio, he was traded to the Steelers before the 2024 NFL Draft for a 2025 sixth-round draft pick. Although, in this new environment, Fields has played great, only throwing one interception to his ten total touchdowns and 1,106 passing yards on the season, it is clear that the change of scenery has been good.
Although the Steelers are in a positive start and great position, Wilson will most likely start on Sunday. Is this the right move? We don't know yet, but having two good quarterbacks instead of one is a good problem. With a tough matchup against the Jets, this game is a big one for the Steelers as they are arguably the best team they have faced this season. The significance of this moment is palpable, and Sunday night in Pittsburgh will be a huge game for the franchise. I can't wait to see what happens, and I'm sure you can't either.
