J.J. McCarthy playing in Preseason Week 1

It broke yesterday that rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy tore his meniscus in his right knee and would need surgery. His choices were between a trim, which would leave him out for a few weeks, or a full repair, which would be a multiple-month recovery process. Per Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero, the rookie has gotten a full meniscus repair and is now out for the entire 2024 campaign. Although disappointing news for the rookie, the full repair seems to be the best long-term option for both the Vikings and McCarthy.

The Vikings are excited and optimistic about the future of rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy; they will have to wait an entire season. The national champion had a stellar first preseason game, throwing 188 yards, two touchdown passes, and 18 yards rushing himself. With no more McCarthy, the Vikings quarterback room moves to Sam Darnold at QB1, Nick Mullens at QB2, and Jaren Hall at QB3. With Sam Darnold set to start, which was always the case even pre-injury for McCarthy, it will be his first time leading a team since his 2022 campaign with the Panthers. Darnold was on the 49ers last season, playing ten games but only throwing for 297 yards and two touchdowns. With McCarthy out of the picture, it looks like the Vikings will be led by Sam Darnold and star wide receiver Justin Jefferson.

Trying to improve on the 7-10 season last year, it will be interesting to see how the 2024 season unfolds for HC Kevin O'Connell and the Vikings.
