Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy, the No. 10 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, is out for the entire 2024 NFL season after undergoing a full meniscus repair on the morning of August 14.
This comes just a day after the Vikings announced that McCarthy would need to undergo surgery for a torn meniscus that bothered him throughout his play during the Minnesota Vikings' 24-23 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders on Saturday, August 10.
It's a tough blow for Minnesota, as news of McCarthy's surgery breaks just three days after he completed 11/17 passes for 188 yards and 2 TDs in the #Vikings 24-23 preseason victory over the Oakland #Raiders in his NFL debut on August 10. https://t.co/SuEyropN7t

McCarthy, who is fresh off winning a national championship with the Michigan Wolverines in 2024, was selected No. 10 overall in the 2024 NFL Draft with the hope of replacing veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins, who now plays for the Atlanta Falcons. With Justin Jefferson as the Vikings WR1, Minnesota needs a talented arm at the quarterback position to feed Jefferson the ball.
McCarthy hopes to play in an NFL regular season game, but it will have to wait until 2025, as Sam Darnold will likely fill McCarthy’s role as the Vikings' starting quarterback. Darnold spent his previous season serving with the San Francisco 49ers under Brock Purdy.
