The Denver Broncos had a tough week 6 after losing to the Los Angeles Chargers 23-16 at home after a dismal start by both the defense and the offense. After losing their first two games of the season, the Broncos found a rhythm on both ends of the ball that stemmed from solid field management by rookie quarterback Bo Nix and game changing defense from the entire unit that propelled the Broncos defense to be ranked top two in the NFL after five weeks. This dominant run by the defense helped the Broncos rattle off a three game winning streak and a 3-2 record that many fans around the NFL found to be quite a surprise. Although the Broncos turned heads from weeks three through five, Denver found itself coming back to Earth against the Chargers on Sunday after star cornerback and key player Patrick Surtain II left the game with a concussion on the first defensive possession of the game.

Surtain II sustained the injury during the Chargers’ first drive on Sunday afternoon after breaking up a pass, as he usually does, and hit his head hard as a result of making the athletic play. PS2 has been a game changer for the Broncos’ defense all season and one of their key leaders for a defense that was deemed to be one of the worst in the NFL to start the season. So far through six games Surtain II has recorded 14 total tackles, eight solo, and six assisted, with two interceptions that he made in week five against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Surtain II’s injury seemed to suck the life out of the Broncos’ offense on Sunday as Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert led a long, methodical drive to put the Chargers up 3-0. Although the Chargers only scored a field goal on their opening drive, anyone watching the game could tell the absence of PS2 was apparent with Herbert completing six passes on their opening possession. The question now is how long will Surtain II be out. It is expected that he will not be playing this week as Denver travels to New Orleans for a short week to play Thursday Night Football. Hopefully PS2 will be able to return for week 8 vs the Carolina Panthers but head injuries are not something to take light and with the generational player that PS2 is, I’m sure the Broncos will take all the necessary precautions to get their star corner back and healthy again soon.
