Wilson was named Pittsburgh’s starting QB on Wednesday, August 28, less than two weeks before the Steelers' first contest. The news broke just one day after it was announced that the Steelers and Patriots were the final two NFL teams yet to name a starting quarterback for opening weekend.
The choice came between veteran quarterback and Superbowl champion Russell Wilson and former Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields. Fields joined the team in the Summer of 2024 after the Steelers had already signed Wilson. The desperate need to fill the quarterback position came from now-Eagles quarterback Kenny Pickett departing from Pittsburgh after two seasons with the Steelers.
Wilson will now be starting for his third team in his career after previously leading the Seattle Seahawks from 2012-2021 and the Denver Broncos from 2022-2023. Head coach Mike Tomlin has never experienced a losing season during his era in the Steel City and hopes to continue his victorious streak into the 2024 season.
With Wilson being named as a starter, all eyes are now on New England, as they are the final NFL organization left to name a starting quarterback for Week 1.
