The Kansas City Chiefs have placed quarterback Patrick Mahomes on the Injured Reserve list, the team announced Wednesday.

The three-time Super Bowl Champion and two-time NFL MVP quarterback suffered a season-ending ACL tear in Kansas City's 16-13 Week 15 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, which eliminated the Chiefs from playoff contention.

Mahomes underwent surgery the next day.

However, before exiting the contest, Mahomes was having a rough time against the Chargers' defense. He completed 16 of 28 attempts for 189 yards, but threw an interception and was sacked five times for a loss of 21 yards. He ran for the game's only touchdown and finished the game with 15 rushing yards on two carries, but the Chiefs struggled to make offensive strides throughout the entire game.

Backup quarterback Gardner Minshew took over in the waning minutes of the fourth quarter and in a short-clock situation, managed to put Kansas City into field goal range, completing three passes for 22 yards. However, Minshew threw the game-sealing interception, looking to gain more yards before having the opportunity to kick a field goal.

Minshew will likely be the starter for the remainder of the season.

Mahomes ends his 2025 campaign with 3,587 passing yards, 22 passing touchdowns, and 11 interceptions, which are similar to his production in 2024 when he played 16 games: 3,928 passing yards, 26 passing touchdowns, and 11 interceptions.

The three-time Super Bowl MVP will have the rest of the 2025 season and the offseason to recover before returning to Kansas City in 2026.
