Another notable hold-in ended Monday as star Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin reached a three-year, $96 million extension that includes a $30 million signing bonus. The 2019 third-round pick has been looking for a new deal since the end of the 2024 season after making his second Pro Bowl selection while also recording his fifth-straight 1,000 plus yard receiving season for Washington.

The Commanders wide receiver one was hoping the contract extension would come at a reasonable pace but this was not the case as McLaurin did not participate in any team activities, starting in June that found him losing $104,768 for skipping the mandatory three-day minicamp. This hold-in bled into Terry not reporting to camp for the first four days, resulting in more fines that cost him another $200,000 before being placed on the PUP list for an ankle injury the team said he sustained at the end of last season. Before McLaurin did not participate in OTAs and minicamp he was seen at voluntary workouts in the spring but seemed to have re-aggravated the ankle injury that kept him out until August 16th when the Commanders activated him from the PUP list. In between all of this commotion, McLaurin requested a trade from the Commanders on July 31st in what seemed to be a measure to expedite the extension process. With this extension now finalized, McLaurin can now focus on the 2025 season without worrying about if the Commanders would extend him following the end of his contract at the end of the upcoming season.

McLaurin has shown steady growth since his rookie season in 2019 and had a career season in 2024 for touchdown catches, 13, and a career high in receptions with 86. The Ohio State alum has consistently shown that he can produce no matter who is under center for Washington but with the addition of quarterback Jayden Daniels, McLaurin seems to be poised to reach even higher heights in 2025. The 13 touchdown receptions that McLaurin had in 2024 was one less than the previous three seasons combined. If McLaurin and Daniels can continue to build chemistry and Daniels does not have the "sophomore slump”, the Commanders could find themselves contending for the NFC East, especially after making the NFC Championship game last season.
