The Eagles suffered an early blow on the opening play of the 2025 season when fullback Ben VanSumeren went down covering the opening kickoff. After being evaluated on the field, VanSumeren was carted off and ruled out for the rest of the game with a knee injury.
You have to be one unlucky person to blow your knee on the first play of the season. Eagles Ben VanSumeren did just that pic.twitter.com/ltQGg68baP

VanSumeren appeared in 20 games over the past two seasons, recording 16 tackles, including one in his lone postseason appearance.
The Eagles’ troubles continued while VanSumeren was being tended to. Defensive tackle Jalen Carter was ejected for spitting on Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott during the stoppage, giving Dallas a shorter field and ultimately a go-ahead touchdown.
