Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Penix's season is over after the Falcons announced that the second-year starter will undergo season-ending knee surgery on his torn ACL.
Penix was injured in the third quarter of Atlanta's 30-27 loss to the Carolina Panthers, when he was tackled on a passing attempt and planted awkwardly on his left leg. Before exiting the game, Penix completed 13 of 16 passes for 175 passing yards. Atlanta's backup quarterback, Kirk Cousins, entered the game to relieve Penix and completed six of 14 passes for 48 yards.
Penix was placed on IR on Monday, before the official announcement came on Wednesday that Penix's season would be over. Cousins will be the starter for the remainder of the season.
In his nine games played this season, Penix threw for 1,982 passing yards and nine touchdowns while tossing three interceptions and rushing for 70 yards and a touchdown.
The timeline for Penix's surgery aligns directly with the beginning of the 2026 NFL season, with a nine-month recovery window, which is set for mid-August.
