Disappointing news for Texans fans came out yesterday (8/25) as ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Joe Mixon won’t be activated from the non-football injury list by Tuesday 4 p.m. ET deadline due to an ankle injury. This means that Mixon will not be eligible to play at least the first four games of the 2025 season. This ankle injury has been hampering Mixon all offseason, causing him to miss OTA’s and minicamp. It will be interesting to see how many games Mixon misses this season as the last time he participated in a game or practice with no limitations or restrictions for Houston was during the Texans divisional round matchup with the Kansas City Chiefs.

While Mixon has been sidelined this offseason the Texans made some moves to hopefully fill the void that will be left with Mixon unable to suit up to start the season. The Texans signed veteran running back Nick Chubb on June 9th after the Browns let Chubb walk in free agency. To add some youth to their running back room they signed USC’s Woody Marks in the fourth round of the 2025 NFL Draft. Marks recorded 1,133 rushing yards and 9 rushing touchdowns on 198 carries at USC, averaging 5.7 yards per carry last season and seems to be poised to make a contribution early now that Mixon is absent and Nick Chubb’s expensive injury history. The Texans also still have Dameon Pierce who has seen less production since his breakout year in 2022, where he ran for 939 yards on 220 attempts. Although Pierce only had 40 carries in 2024, he did manage to average 7.3 yards per carry. If Pierce can get back to his 2022 form the three running back combo of Chubb, Marks, and Pierce could be quite serviceable for a Texans backfield that relied heavily on Mixon last season.
