Breaking news out of New Jersey, former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Justin Fields has reached an agreement with the New York Jets on a two-year, $40 million deal that includes $30 million guaranteed. The news was first reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter. This deal brings Fields into a situation that he has not had since being drafted by the Chicago Bears, being QB1 after the Jets earlier last week told veteran Aaron Rodgers that they would be releasing him. Fields started the 2024 season as the Steelers starter due to Russell Wilson dealing with a calf injury that had Fields start six games for Pittsburgh before ceding the job to Wilson once he returned from injury. In those six games, Fields posted 1,106 passing yards, five touchdowns and only one interception. If you asked any Steelers fan what they thought of Fields before he was replaced by Wilson, many were shocked that he was replaced by the veteran that struggled the previous two seasons in Denver. Wilson then came into Pittsburgh and showed fans why Mike Tomlin decided to roll with him instead of Fields for the remainder of the season. Wilson finished the 2024 regular season with 2,482 passing yards, 16 touchdowns and five interceptions en route to a wildcard berth that would end in the Steelers losing 28-14 to their division rival the Baltimore Ravens.

Fields showed glimpses of why he was drafted as the eleventh overall pick by the Bears in the 2021 NFL Draft this season in Pittsburgh, with his ability to extend plays out of the pocket due to his elusiveness and Lamar Jackson-esqe mobility, which is probably why Fields was on vacation in Dubai when he learned of the news of his new team. As many NFL fans know, Chicago is the destination where, in recent years, young quarterbacks go to die, but Fields found a refreshing restart in Pittsburgh with hopes of finally landing the QB1 role for an extended period of time. Fields seemed to do enough to prove to other front offices that he is worthy of a starting quarterback spot and has now found his new home in Woody Johnson’s franchise, at least for the next two seasons. The Jets have been one of the most discombobulated franchises of the past decade but by bringing in a young, athletic quarterback, one who played with star wide out Garrett Wilson in college at Ohio State, could begin to provide stability to a franchise who hasn't been able to get anything right for quite some time.
