Week 2 of Thursday Night Football found itself in Labeau Field where the now 2-0 Green Bay Packers led wire-to-wire in a 27-18 win over the Washington Commanders. Green Bay defended home field tenaciously, only allowing a normally explosive Commanders offense 230 total yards. Washington averaged 3.5 yards per play tonight thanks to the relentless pass rush of Micah Parsons and the Packers defense who had 12 hits on Commanders QB Jayden Daniels. Parsons was busting through the Washington line all night finishing with 3 QB hits and a half sack, all while facing double teams the majority of the game as well as one triple team.

Packers quarterback Jordan Love seemed comfortable all night, finishing 19 for 31 with 292 passing yards and two passing touchdowns. Love got into a rhythm early, leading a seven play, 96 yard touchdown drive that ended in a touchdown pass to Romeo Doubs to set the tone early. Josh Jacobs capped off a 10 play, 92 yard drive to extend the Packers lead to 14-0 with 7:34 still left in the first half. Jacobs had 23 carries for 84 yards to go along with his two yard touchdown run.Washington finally got on the scoreboard after converting a field goal but could not find much success in the first three quarters of this game. The Commanders did not score their first touchdown until early in the fourth quarter due to the constant pressure on Jayden Daniels.
Daniels finished 24 for 42 with 200 yards and two touchdown passes. The looming presence of newly acquired Micah Parsons seemed too much for the Commanders front five which only fueled the rest of the Packers defense. Terry McLaurin finished with only five catches for 48 yards, unable to connect from any of Daniels’s deep balls. Zach Ertz and Deebo Samuel caught both touchdown passes, Deebo’s first with the Commanders, but Washington’s offense came up with too little too late with no help from their run game. Jacory Croskey-Merritt and Austin Ekeler, who left the game with an apparent achilles injury in the fourth quarter, both had 17 yards, due to the Packers controlling the trenches.

The biggest surprise of the game was Packers tight end Tucker Kraft who had his first career 100-yard receiving game. Kraft hauled in six catches for 124 yards and a touchdown catch that sent Labeau field into a frenzy. Jordan Love was finding open receivers all night which led to the Packers executing eight plays of 15-yards or more. The one major loss the Packers had tonight was losing wide receiver Jayden Reed to a broken collar bone on the opening drive of the game.

Green Bay will be riding high after winning their first two games of the season in a commanding win that will have Dan Quinn and the Commanders going back to the drawing board. The Packers look solid on both sides of the ball and even though it is only Week 2, Green Bay looks poised to make a run in the playoffs, if they can stay healthy. Washington’s defense looked slow and ill-equipped to hang with the Packers tonight and I’m worried it could continue to bleed into the rest of the season. Jayden Daniels and the offense will bounce back from this performance but I’m not sure they can carry the defense like they did last season on their way to the NFC Championship.
