The Los Angeles Chargers have added a speedy option to their backfield for new offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel.
Running back Keaton Mitchell has agreed to a two-year, $9.25 million contract with Los Angeles that includes $5 million fully guaranteed, according to reports Thursday.
Mitchell became available after the Baltimore Ravens chose not to tender him as a restricted free agent, giving the Chargers an opportunity to add a running back known for his explosive speed.
Originally an undrafted free agent in 2023, Mitchell quickly made an impact during his rookie season in Baltimore, producing several big plays and adding a dynamic element to the Ravens’ offense. His momentum was halted by a significant knee injury late that year, which also limited him for much of the 2024 season.
Mitchell showed signs of returning to form in 2025, rushing for 341 yards and a touchdown on 59 carries, including a 55-yard run. However, opportunities were limited while playing behind star back Derrick Henry.
Now further removed from the injury, Mitchell will look to carve out a larger role in Los Angeles. He joins a Chargers backfield that includes Omarion Hampton and Kimani Vidal.
The addition gives McDaniel another speed element in his offense. During his previous tenure with the Miami Dolphins, McDaniel helped maximize the talents of explosive running back De'Von Achane. While Mitchell’s role remains to be determined, his speed could create opportunities in the Chargers’ offense, particularly on outside runs and big-play situations.
