The Washington Commanders are bringing back quarterback Marcus Mariota on a one-year, $7 million contract, according to NFL Network. The deal could be worth up to $11 million with incentives.
Mariota, 32, played a significant role for Washington during the 2025 season, starting eight games and appearing in 11 overall while rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels dealt with injuries. Mariota threw for 1,695 yards with 10 touchdowns and seven interceptions during that stretch, although the Commanders won only two of the games he started.
He also stepped in during the 2024 season when Daniels missed time, appearing in three games. In two of those appearances — both Commanders victories — Mariota threw for a combined 366 yards and four touchdowns. One of his most memorable moments came in the regular-season finale against the Dallas Cowboys, when he completed a 5-yard touchdown pass with two seconds remaining to secure the win.
During his time in Washington, Mariota developed a strong connection with Daniels, serving as a mentor to the young quarterback. Both players share similar career backgrounds as former Heisman Trophy winners and No. 2 overall picks in the NFL Draft.
Mariota entered the league in 2015 when he was selected second overall by the Tennessee Titans. He spent five seasons in Tennessee and enjoyed his most productive year in 2016, throwing for 3,426 yards with 26 touchdowns and nine interceptions.
Since leaving the Titans, Mariota has also spent time with the Las Vegas Raiders, Atlanta Falcons and Philadelphia Eagles before joining Washington.
Over his career, Mariota has started 82 games, throwing for 17,879 yards with 107 touchdowns and 62 interceptions. He has also contributed as a runner, totaling 2,453 rushing yards and 19 touchdowns.
