Andy Dalton is on the move once again, with the veteran signal-caller set to continue his long NFL career in a new city. The Philadelphia Eagles are acquiring Dalton from the Carolina Panthers in exchange for a 2027 seventh-round pick, adding experience and depth to their quarterback room.
Now 38, Dalton enters his 16th NFL season having carved out one of the league’s more well-traveled careers in recent years. After spending the bulk of his prime as the longtime starter for the Cincinnati Bengals, he transitioned into a journeyman role with stops that included the Dallas Cowboys, Chicago Bears, and New Orleans Saints before landing in Carolina, where he played the past three seasons.
For Philadelphia, the move is a low-risk addition. The team parts with a late-round pick to secure a veteran presence behind starter Jalen Hurts. While Tanner McKee remains the primary backup, Dalton gives the Eagles a steady, experienced option if injuries or unexpected situations arise.
Dalton’s most notable recent stretch came in 2024 with Carolina. After Bryce Young was benched early in the season, Dalton stepped in and started five games, throwing for 989 yards with seven touchdowns and six interceptions. His run ended following a thumb injury sustained in a car accident, which opened the door for Young to reclaim the starting role.
He saw limited action last season, including one start in a lopsided loss to the Buffalo Bills, finishing that outing with 175 passing yards and an interception.
Across his career, Dalton has compiled nearly 40,000 passing yards along with 254 touchdowns and three Pro Bowl selections, posting a record just above .500 as a starter. While he’s no longer expected to carry an offense, his experience and composure remain valuable traits for a contender.
In Philadelphia, Dalton slots in as a veteran safety net rather than a featured contributor. Still, his presence could prove important for a team built to compete now, particularly one anchored by a strong defense.
The move also sets up a bit of familiarity for Dalton in 2026. Though he won’t face Cincinnati, the franchise that drafted him in 2011, the Eagles’ schedule includes matchups against several of his former teams, including Dallas, Chicago, and Carolina — offering a few reunion moments along the way.
