Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa didn’t remain on the free-agent market for long. The veteran signal-caller has agreed to a one-year minimum contract with the Atlanta Falcons, according to NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport, Tom Pelissero and Mike Garafolo.
The deal will become official when the new league year begins Wednesday, following Tagovailoa’s release from the Miami Dolphins.
Tagovailoa arrives in Atlanta to fill an intriguing role for the 2026 season. With quarterback Michael Penix Jr. recovering from a season-ending ACL injury, Tagovailoa could potentially open the year as the Falcons’ starter. Longer term, Atlanta views the move as adding an experienced veteran who can both support and compete with Penix, while also fitting a similar offensive profile as a left-handed passer.
The signing comes with minimal financial risk for the Falcons. Despite signing for the veteran minimum, Tagovailoa will still earn about $54 million this season, the majority of which will be paid by Miami following his release.
Tagovailoa became available after the Dolphins parted ways with the former No. 5 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, ending a six-year partnership. During his time in Miami, he showed flashes of franchise-quarterback potential but never fully delivered on those expectations as the team moved toward a new direction and a roster reset during the 2025 season.
In Atlanta, Tagovailoa lands in an offense that could better suit his strengths. New head coach Kevin Stefanski has traditionally built offenses around quick decision-making, accuracy and timing in the passing game while relying heavily on a wide-zone rushing attack. With star running back Bijan Robinson anchoring the ground game, the system could create favorable opportunities for a quarterback who thrives within structure.
Tagovailoa’s mobility and quick release also mirror aspects of Penix’s playing style, which could help the Falcons maintain continuity while the younger quarterback works his way back to full health. With Kirk Cousins moving on this offseason, the addition of Tagovailoa provides Atlanta with a proven veteran presence and answers one of the team’s most pressing questions heading into 2026.
