The Los Angeles Chargers re-signed a big piece to their defense Saturday, securing a one-year extension with nine-time Pro-Bowler Khalil Mack who will return to Sofi Stadium for his 13th NFL season. Mack was scheduled to be a free agent heading into the new league year which starts on March 11th. The one-year extension is accompanied with $18 million guaranteed for fifth overall pick of the 2014 NFL Draft and the heart and soul of the Chargers defense.

Mack has had a productive career in a Chargers uniform recording 195 total tackles, 129 solo tackles, 66 assisted tackles, and 36.5 sacks in 62 games played for LA. While Mack missed four games this past season due to a dislocated elbow, he still managed to record 5.5 sacks and four forced fumbles in only 12 games played. Mack has been the engine to the Chargers pass rush and proven leader beside safety Derwin James and you can be sure James and head coach Jim Harbaugh will be relieved to know they secured the 12-year veteran for at least one more season and did not have to play the free agent game and potentially pay more than what they signed him for on Saturday.

Khalil Mack has been quite the productive pass rusher in the NFL and since being traded to the Chargers in 2022 from the Chicago Bears, Mack only needs a half sack to tie how many he recorded in the Windy City and only 4.5 more sacks to break the number of sacks he recorded with the Raiders (40.5).

If Mack can stay healthy and the Chargers can repeat as a top-five defense in the NFL, Mack may find himself with another large contract at the end of next season barring his ability to stay healthy and want to stay in LA or the NFL in general.
