The Miami Dolphins are banking on a new quarterback for the future. Malik Willis has agreed to a three-year, $67.4 million contract with the Dolphins, including $45 million fully guaranteed, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported.
The move comes after Miami parted ways with Tua Tagovailoa, absorbing roughly $99 million in dead money over two years via the June 1-release mechanism, clearing the path for Willis to take over under center.
General manager Jon-Eric Sullivan and head coach Jeff Hafley are betting big on Willis, having worked with him over the past two seasons in Green Bay. “If anyone knows Willis’ strengths and areas for growth, it’s them,” said a source familiar with the situation.
Willis, a third-round pick of the Tennessee Titans in 2022, struggled in his first two NFL seasons. In limited action with Nashville, he had difficulty reading defenses and moving the offense consistently. A move to Green Bay under coach Matt LaFleur provided a reset. In 11 appearances, including three starts, Willis showed improved accuracy, quick decision-making, and dynamic rushing ability in a simplified, RPO-heavy offense.
While the talent is undeniable, Willis remains unpolished. He saw few traditional drop-back opportunities in Green Bay, and much of his development will hinge on how Hafley and offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik design the Dolphins’ offense for him.
The $22.5 million-per-year deal is significant but reasonable for a starting quarterback, especially for a team maneuvering under tight salary-cap constraints. It’s slightly higher per year than what the New York Jets paid Justin Fields last season, reflecting Miami’s commitment to building around Willis as their new signal-caller.
