The New England Patriots continue to add offensive pieces around quarterback Drake Maye following their loss in Super Bowl LX.
New England agreed to sign former Green Bay Packers wide receiver Romeo Doubs to a four-year contract worth roughly $70 million, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Tuesday.
Doubs, 25, spent the first four seasons of his career in Green Bay and now receives a major payday despite never surpassing 724 receiving yards in a single season. The move gives the Patriots another option in the passing game and could complicate a potential trade pursuit of A.J. Brown from the Philadelphia Eagles. Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel previously coached Brown when the receiver began his career with the Tennessee Titans.
The signing is part of a series of moves by New England to strengthen its roster. On Monday, the team added offensive lineman Alijah Vera-Tucker on a three-year, $42 million deal and fullback Reggie Gilliam on a three-year contract worth up to $12 million. The Patriots also bolstered their defensive line by signing Dre'Mont Jones to a three-year, $39.5 million agreement.
Doubs joins a receiving group that currently includes Kayshon Boutte, Mack Hollins, Demario Douglas, Kyle Williams and Efton Chism III. The Patriots created an opening in the unit when they released veteran receiver Stefon Diggs last week.
Before landing Doubs, New England had also been linked to free-agent receivers Alec Pierce and Jalen Nailor, but Pierce re-signed with the Indianapolis Colts and Nailor joined the Las Vegas Raiders.
In four seasons with the Packers, Doubs totaled 202 receptions for 2,424 yards and 21 touchdowns in 59 games, including 50 starts. He has also been productive in the postseason, recording 20 catches for 371 yards and two touchdowns in four playoff appearances, highlighted by an eight-catch, 124-yard performance in Green Bay’s playoff loss to the Chicago Bears this past January.
