Nate Scheelhaase Los Angeles Rams as he enters his third NFL season on the coaching side.
The 35-year-old, widely viewed as one of the league’s rising offensive minds, steps into the role after serving as the Rams’ pass game coordinator. He replaces Mike LaFleur, who departed to become head coach of the Arizona Cardinals following three seasons under Sean McVay. Scheelhaase was part of a staff that helped guide Los Angeles to the NFC Championship Game and oversee the NFL’s top-ranked offense last season.
His rapid ascent has not gone unnoticed. During the most recent hiring cycle, Scheelhaase drew head coaching interest from the Baltimore Ravens, Cleveland Browns, Pittsburgh Steelers and Las Vegas Raiders. League observers have praised his interview presence and offensive acumen, with inexperience cited as the only notable concern.
Scheelhaase’s promotion continues a trend of McVay assistants ascending to top jobs across the league. Former members of the Rams’ coaching tree include Zac Taylor of the Cincinnati Bengals, Matt LaFleur of the Green Bay Packers, Kevin O'Connell of the Minnesota Vikings and Liam Coen of the Jacksonville Jaguars, among others.
Before arriving in Los Angeles in 2024, Scheelhaase built his résumé at Illinois and Iowa State, serving as offensive coordinator at the latter in 2023. A former starting quarterback at Illinois from 2010-13, he has quickly transitioned from college standout to one of the NFL’s fastest-rising young coordinators.
